Caring through retirement

Jun 14, 2024

On Thursday, 23 May, Alteris Women hosted an event with a focus on “Caring Through Retirement”. With more than 50 in attendance, the conversations focused on the emotional, financial, and practical challenges of informal caregiving.

Currently, women represent 7 out of 10 primary carers. The peak age for a female carer is 55, which is a time in life when many women may have recently transitioned out of child rearing only to assume caring responsibilities for a relative or friend.  As women have entered the workforce in larger numbers, the challenge of balancing unpaid care with paid work is increasing.

We were very fortunate to have Kate Montgomerie (Care Consultant, Care & Living with Mercer), Monique Pockran (Founder, Dahlia Dementia Guidance & Support), and Kerri Mendl (Financial Adviser, Lifestyle and Care) join us to discuss the importance of building a strong network. The panel provided practical tips on where to go and what support is available when it comes to helping a loved one on their care journey. Guests left the event with a better understanding of the support that is available, how to be prepared financially, and with the peace of mind that they are not alone.

Dementia is the leading cause of death for women and the second leading cause of death for men in Australia. Given the disease’s prevalence and its connection to our focus on informal carers, it made perfect sense to partner with the Royce Simmons Foundation for this event. We heard Royce’s eye-opening story and learned about some staggering dementia statistics, which are only increasing. On the day, we raised $1,850 for this worthy cause

We look forward to hosting more events throughout year and providing a platform to help advance the economic standing of women by providing insights, education, and tools that give them the confidence and empowerment to make decisions that best suit their needs. At Alteris, we are committed to helping our clients feel more confident about their financial future and reach their goals.

With a specialist division of financial advisers who are accredited in aged care advice, we have a team that can talk you through the various options and explain the financial considerations associated with helping a loved one along their care journey.
